AEDs for Sports Stadiums and Athletics

Sudden Cardiac Arrest in athletes is more common than most coaches, athletic directors, and parents realise. Undetected heart conditions, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), commotio cordis, long QT syndrome, often have no symptoms until a cardiac event occurs during exertion. These conditions affect an estimated 1 in 500 young athletes. The tragic cases of professional athletes collapsing mid-game (Damar Hamlin, Christian Eriksen, Fabrice Muamba) have raised awareness, but the real risk is at the youth and high school level, where medical staff are rarely present and response times are longest. A defibrillator on the sideline can be the difference between life and death.

Sports AED Placement Requirements

Sports AED placement must account for large outdoor areas, changing conditions, and the need for rapid response. The AHA recommends that no location on a sports facility should be more than a 90-second sprint from an AED. ✓ One AED per sports field/court, never rely on a single device for multiple active fields ✓ IP55 minimum water resistance, outdoor environments, rain, and humidity demand it ✓ At least one trained AED responder present at all practices and games ✓ AED accessible within 90-second sprint from any location on the playing area ✓ Pediatric capability for all youth sports venues (ages 8 and under) ✓ Registered with local EMS, dispatchers need to know your AED is there ✓ Clearly visible storage, bright signage, alarmed cabinet, not locked ✓ Monthly inspection log, check status indicator, pad and battery expiry ✓ Emergency action plan posted at facility and rehearsed with all staff
