The quick answer
- A fully online CPR certification exists and is legal, but is rarely accepted by employers, OSHA, or healthcare.
- For a job, use a blended course: the lesson online, then a 30 to 60 minute in-person skills check.
- The certificate must name AHA (American Heart Association) or ARC (American Red Cross). “Nationally recognized” without a name is a red flag.
- Cost in October 2026: $15 to $50 online only; $70 to $150 blended. Cards are good for 2 years.

02 Online CPR certifications by who accepts them
| Course type | Format | Time | Cost (2026) | Accepted by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AHA Heartsaver CPR AED (blended) | Online + in-person skills check | 2 hr + 30 min | $70 to $110 | Employers, OSHA, schools, daycares, gyms, lifeguards |
| AHA BLS Provider (blended) | Online + in-person skills check | 2 hr + 60 min | $100 to $150 | Nurses, EMTs, dentists, healthcare workers |
| ARC Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED (blended) | Online + in-person skills check | 2 hr + 30 min | $75 to $100 | Employers, OSHA, schools, childcare |
| 100% online CPR (private providers) | Online only, no skills check | 1 to 2 hr | $15 to $50 | Personal readiness. Rarely accepted by employers. Not for OSHA jobs or healthcare. |
03 What a blended course looks like, step by step
A blended course has two parts. The online part is a video lesson with quizzes. You can do it on your phone in the kitchen, pause it, come back the next day. The in-person part is 30 to 60 minutes with an instructor who watches you do compressions on a manikin and run an AED. If you pass both, the AHA or ARC card is issued the same day. It is good for 2 years.
If you live far from a training site, this does not stop you. The in-person skills check can happen at a fire station, a gym, a hospital clinic, or a mobile training session that runs weekly in most US cities. Most training providers will do the skills check at your workplace if you have 5 or more people.

05 Red flags: courses that will waste your money
- The site says “nationally recognized” but never names AHA or ARC. If an employer is asking, email them the course name and ask directly before you pay.
- The site offers “lifetime certification”. No real CPR certification is lifetime. AHA and ARC cards expire every 2 years because the techniques themselves change.
- The course gives you a card the same hour you pay, with no skills check and no video of your compressions. OSHA will reject this card every time.
