The quick answer
- Pediatric pads are for a patient under 8 years old or under 55 lb. They lower the shock energy for a small heart.
- Six AED families are sold in the US today. Four need a separate pediatric pad set. Two use a button on the device for child mode.
- Prices in October 2026: $105 to $225 depending on your AED brand.
- If pediatric pads are not available, adult pads on a child are safer than no AED (American Heart Association).

02 The age and weight rule, in plain words
Every pediatric pad in the United States follows the same rule: use them on a patient under 8 years old or under 55 pounds (25 kg). If you cannot tell the age and the child looks older than 8 or heavier than 55 lb, use adult pads. Adult pads on a smaller child are still safer than no shock. That is the American Heart Association guideline and the American Red Cross guideline.
For infants under 1 year, the guideline prefers a manual defibrillator used by trained medical staff. If only an AED is available, use it. Place one pad on the center of the chest and the other on the center of the back so the pads do not touch. Pediatric pads over adult pads if you have them.
03 Shelf life and replacement
Pediatric pads expire. Two or four years from the date on the pouch depending on the brand. The expiry date is printed on the outside of the sealed pouch. If you open a pouch for training or by mistake, the pads are no longer usable, order a new set that day. See our full guide to AED pads shelf life and replacement.
On the HeartSine samaritan line, the Pad-Pak is one unit that holds the battery and the pads, and it expires as a single part. That is the simplest option for a parent who wants one date to track.
