  • Certification: 2 year AHA Heartsaver CPR AED card, OSHA accepted, state board accepted in 46 of 50 states.
  • Who needs it: any US workplace with employees responsible for first aid under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.151(b).

02 What the 3 hours cover

The AHA Heartsaver CPR AED curriculum is sealed by the American Heart Association in 2020 and has not changed. The instructor runs:

  • Minutes 0-30, scene safety, calling 911, adult CPR demo, compressions on manikin
  • Minutes 30-60, adult AED use, pediatric considerations, two-rescuer sequence
  • Minutes 60-90, child and infant CPR, choking, back blows and abdominal thrusts
  • Minutes 90-150, hands-on skills practice on manikins, each attendee compresses, ventilates, and runs an AED trainer
  • Minutes 150-180, skills test, card issue, Q&A

03 Is onsite CPR training worth it vs online?

For personal readiness: online is fine. For an employer-required card: online alone fails. OSHA 1910.151(b) states first aid personnel must be “adequately trained,” and OSHA’s own 2016 Letter of Interpretation to Cal/OSHA clarified that “adequate” requires an in-person skills check for CPR. A fully online certificate is rejected on compliance audit.

The practical difference between online-only and onsite is 90 seconds. The AHA 2020 Resuscitation Guidelines require compressions at 100-120 per minute at 2 to 2.4 inches depth. Watching a video does not train the shoulder tempo. Compressing a manikin for 20 minutes does.

04 Who the class is for

Six workplace categories are OSHA-required to maintain first aid trained personnel on site under 29 CFR 1910.151(b):
WorkplaceOSHA requirementHow many should be certified
Offices 10+ employees1910.151(b)10% of staff, minimum 2 per floor
Restaurants, food service1910.151(b) + state board1 per shift, minimum 2 per location
Construction sites29 CFR 1926.50(c)1 per crew of 10 at remote sites
Manufacturing & warehouses1910.151(b)1 per 25 employees per shift
Schools, daycareState education boardVaries by state, typically all PE and admin staff
Fitness centers, gymsState law (36 states)All front-line staff on duty
For a 50 person office that is 5 certified employees. The 10 person group booking at $785 covers 2 training cycles (5 people now, 5 people in 2 years when the first batch renews).

Book your date before Q4 close

Instructor dispatch runs first-come. Groups booking in November typically run in January; December bookings slip to February.

05 Add a workplace AED to the training

CPR without an AED is CPR training only. OSHA 1910.151(b) does not mandate AED possession, but 36 US states do (see AED laws by state). The pairing we recommend after a group CPR class:

  • Philips HeartStart OnSite, $1,589 new or $875 recertified at AED Leader. Easiest to use for untrained bystanders.
  • ZOLL AED Plus, $1,789 at AED Leader. Only AED on the market with Real CPR Help compression feedback.
  • LIFEPAK CR2, $1,995 at AED Leader. One pad set covers adult and child via a button on the device.
