Quick answer

  • What it is: a 1 hour hands-on class in tourniquet use, wound packing, and direct pressure, launched by the US Department of Homeland Security in 2015 after Sandy Hook.
  • Who needs it: schools, offices, restaurants, construction crews, event staff, anyone 10+ minutes from an emergency room.
  • Cost in Oct 2026: $200 for 10 people, $500 for 25 people, delivered on your site. $20 per person at 10, drops to $20 at 25.
  • Certification: none required by Stop the Bleed itself. A completion card is issued and valid 2 years in most states.
  • How to book: group price locked on the AED Leader product page, instructor dispatched within 10 business days.
Fastest signal: trauma kills in 5 minutes. EMS averages 7 to 14 minutes in US cities (JEMS 2024 national benchmark). The gap is yours to close.

01 What Stop the Bleed training actually covers

The class runs 60 minutes, split into three modules the American College of Surgeons built in 2015: direct pressure, wound packing, tourniquet. The instructor demonstrates each on a manikin, then every attendee practices on a hemorrhage simulator until they can apply a Combat Application Tourniquet (C-A-T) in under 90 seconds. That is the pass bar.

Attendees finish with: how to spot a life-threatening bleed in 10 seconds, how to pack a wound with hemostatic gauze, how to improvise a tourniquet when none is available, and how to call out a trauma to arriving EMS. Each attendee goes home with the DHS Bleeding Control card.

What is NOT in the class

CPR. AED use. Choking. Those are separate classes. The CPR AED course at $89 pairs with Stop the Bleed cleanly for the full first-aid stack.

03 Who needs Stop the Bleed training

The DHS campaign names six priority settings, each tied to real published fatality data:

35%

of preventable trauma deaths from bleeding (ACS Hartford Consensus)

5 min

until a trauma victim bleeds out

7-14 min

US urban EMS response time

K-12 schools

Required by law in 11 states as of October 2026: Texas, Indiana, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Michigan, Ohio. Each state funds the kits but not always the training. The AED laws by state hub lists each statute.

Offices and corporate HQ

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.151(b) requires “a person trained to render first aid” when no clinic is within 3 to 4 minutes. For a mid-rise office that is you.

Restaurants and food service

Knife and fryer injuries put food service at 2.5x the general rate for severe lacerations per BLS 2024.

Construction sites

OSHA logged 1,075 construction fatalities in 2023, 23% of all workplace deaths. Falls and struck-by are the top two, both high-bleed events. See workplace emergency action plan for the OSHA-aligned template.

Houses of worship and event venues

Active-shooter preparedness since 2017 treats Stop the Bleed as the second priority after Run-Hide-Fight.

Rural homes 10+ minutes from a hospital

Rural EMS response times exceed 25 minutes in 47% of US counties per NEMSIS 2024. A tourniquet in a glovebox is the cheapest minutes you can buy.

04 Stop the Bleed vs CPR AED vs Combined

Most buyers ask for Stop the Bleed as an add-on to a CPR AED course. The combined booking saves one instructor dispatch fee and runs 2.5 hours instead of 4.

Verdict: if you are buying one class, buy CPR AED + First Aid at $850. If you have a CPR AED program already, add Stop the Bleed at $200. See which CPR certification employers accept.

Lock a date before your fiscal year closes

AED Leader books instructors on a first-come basis. Groups scheduled before Thanksgiving typically run in January, after that it slips to February.

05 What to buy alongside the training (the kit)

Training without kits is theatre. OSHA and ACS both expect accessible bleeding-control supplies within 60 seconds of any workstation. The baseline bleeding control kit, per the ACS Hartford Consensus:

  • 1 Combat Application Tourniquet (C-A-T, Generation 7), $32
  • 1 pack hemostatic gauze (QuikClot or Celox), $40
  • 1 compression bandage (6 inch Israeli), $12
  • 1 pair trauma shears, $8
  • 1 pair nitrile gloves, $1
  • 1 permanent marker, $2
  • Wall cabinet, $65 to $140 depending on model

Totalled, a mounted public access bleeding control kit runs $160 to $235 per station. Most offices add one per floor; schools add one per classroom hallway cluster.

06 Scheduling: how it actually works

  1. Book on the AED Leader product page by group size.
  2. Instructor dispatch team contacts you within 48 business hours to pick a date.
  3. Lead time is 10 to 15 business days from booking to class.
  4. Instructor arrives with manikins, tourniquets, and simulators. You provide a conference room.
  5. Class runs 60 minutes. Completion cards issued on the spot.
  6. Cards do not require renewal, but refreshers every 2 years are the industry norm per ACS.

07 Frequently asked questions

In 11 US states for K-12 schools (TX, IN, FL, GA, TN, AR, LA, MS, AL, MI, OH as of Oct 2026). OSHA requires first-aid-trained personnel on site under 29 CFR 1910.151(b) when no clinic is within 3-4 minutes; Stop the Bleed satisfies the trauma portion.
The DHS Bleeding Control card does not have a formal expiry. ACS recommends refresher every 2 years because tourniquet handling degrades without practice (Goolsby et al., Journal of Trauma 2019).
CPR1 instructors, all nationally certified in Trauma First Aid through the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. Instructors arrive with manikins, tourniquets, and training supplies. You provide a conference room with chairs.
Not through the group booking. For under 10, the free online module at stopthebleed.org covers the theory, and attendees can join a public class at a local hospital.
The 11 state statutes above fund training grants, not devices. Combined training-plus-kit purchases typically run $800 to $1,400 per classroom cluster. The AED grants funding guide lists compatible state and federal grants.
Hands-on. Every attendee practices tourniquet application and wound packing on a hemorrhage simulator until they pass under 90 seconds (ACS standard). Pure online certification does not exist for Stop the Bleed. The online module is a prerequisite, not a replacement.
$20 flat per person for groups 10 to 25 at AED Leader. There is no volume discount beyond 25. For 50+ people the course splits into two sessions at the same per-person rate.
