AED pads (also called electrodes or defibrillation pads) carry the electrical shock from the AED to the patient's chest. They are single-use, expire every 2 years, and must be brand-matched — a Philips pad will not work on a ZOLL device. Using expired or incompatible pads is the #1 reason AEDs fail at the moment of cardiac arrest (FDA MAUDE database analysis, 2022).
